Gardening Tips (Home) > Gardening Equipments Buying Gardening Equipment on a BudgetIf you have a yard that is extensive, especially an acre or more, you are going to need thousands of square feet of seed. You will be leaving the store with huge bags of pre-packaged seed, fertilizer, loam, and other lawn care products, or you will be purchasing the contents of their bulk barrels. Most stores will load this onto your truck (or squish it into your car) as a courtesy. Many gardening and nursery stores cater to local homeowners who are planting or replanting seasonal lawns and gardens. Many offer the use of their own gardening equipment, free of charge, if you purchase other gardening supplies from them. Where to StartMost gardening equipment, at least for the do-it-yourself gardener, can be found very inexpensively at your local discount store. You don't need franchises like Lowe's and Home Depot for your minor gardening needs such as flowerpots, birdhouses, top soil, rakes, hand rakes, and hand shovels--they are inexpensive and can be found anywhere from Targets to Building 19's. Of course, Wal-Mart is available everywhere and also has a very good supply of gardening equipment. Sheds, gazebos, and other plastic or outdoor items can be found at Sam's Clubs, if there are any around as their prices are generally a little lower than Home Depot or Lowe's. Chemicals such as fertilizer, weed killer, and insect repellent may be lower at these stores, as well; however, it is important to verify strength and quantity. Larger quantities may be purchased cheaper at Home Depot-type stores. When you are looking for high-end gardening equipment such as totes on wheels, plastic potting tables, huge lawn mowers or other power appliances, you should start at Home Depot or Lowe's before looking to buy them at your local gardening store. If you are planning to plant within the next few days or during the week, the local gardening store where you purchased all your seed the store may be even more accommodating in granting your request to borrow their own gardening equipment. Do not expect to be handed the keys to a backhoe or a lawn mower, but you may be offered the large push roller (fill with water to make heavier), the large walk-behind fertilizer, and a few rakes. However, no matter what you borrow, you must make a diligent effort to return promptly. The store's goodwill lending policy cannot be paid forward if customers don't bring back their equipment. Otherwise, you have a store that will remember you as a good customer and you have a place to go when you have questions about your lawn and garden.
